Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) John W. Turner was born in Ironton, Ohio in 1970. He enlisted in the Ohio National Guard in September 1990 and attended Basic Training at Fort Hood, Texas and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Lee, Virginia. Subsequently, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Rio Grande and received his Regular Army Commission through the Army ROTC Program in 1994. Additionally, he received a Master in Human Relations from the University of Oklahoma in 2002.
Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Turner’s military assignments include: Platoon Leader/ Executive Officer, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Law Enforcement Command, Fort Campbell, Kentucky; Platoon Leader, 101st Military Police Company (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky, with deployment to the Sinai Peninsula with 1-327 Infantry Battalion; Provost Marshal, 254th Base Support Battalion, Schinnen, Netherlands; Commander, 212th Military Police Company, Kitzingen, Germany, with deployment to Kosovo; served as the Aide-de-Camp to the Provost Marshal General/Commanding General of the United States Army Criminal Investigation Command, Fort Belvoir, Virginia; Commander, HHC 705th Military Police Battalion, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; Executive Officer and Battalion S3 for the 504thMilitary Police Battalion, Fort Lewis, Washington with deployment to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom; Commander, 508th Military Police Battalion (Provisional), Fort Lewis, Washington; Commander of the Northwestern Joint Regional Correctional Facility, Fort Lewis, Washington; Local Police Transition Team Leader with deployment to Iraq in support of Operation New Dawn; Executive Officer to the Garrison Commander at Fort Riley, Kansas; and Professor of Military Science, San Diego State University. He retired from active military service in September of 2015 and is currently serving as the Senior Army Instructor for the JROTC Program at Lawrence County High School in Louisa, Kentucky.
His military education includes: the Military Police Officer Basic Course, the Military Police Officer Advanced Course, the Combined Arms and Services Staff School, and the Command and General Staff College- Intermediate Level Education Common Core Course and Advanced Operations and
Warfighting Course.
His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (2 OLC), the Meritorious Service Medal
(5 OLC), Army Commendation Medal (3 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (6 OLC), Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, Kosovo Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with 3 Campaign Stars, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, the Multinational Forces and Observers Medal, Air Assault Badge, Parachutist Badge, and the German Marksmanship Efficiency Badge in Gold.
Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Turner is married to the former Denise Morgan of Coal Grove, Ohio and they have three children, Morgan, John Jr., and Avery.
